Danville man who died after being hit by a vehicle identified

URBANA — Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup has identified the man who died after being hit by a vehicle Monday in Danville.

Northrup said that Scott R. Watson, 53, of Danville, was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana at 3:01 p.m. Monday.

Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said police were called to the intersection of North and Gilbert streets at 11:18 a.m. Monday after a 911 call for a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Police officers found Mr. Watson lying in Gilbert Street, according to Thomason, and the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was waiting nearby.

Mr. Watson was then taken to Carle.

Thomason said in a news release Monday that the initial investigation shows that a 21-year-old Danville man was driving a pickup truck south on Gilbert in the inside lane. According to the driver and witnesses, as the driver approached North Street, he had the green light when the pedestrian, who was accompanied by another individual, walked into Gilbert Street against the light and was struck. The individual with the pedestrian left the scene, and police are trying to locate him, according to Thomason.

Northrup said Mr. Watson died from injuries he received when he was hit by the vehicle.

While no autopsy will be conducted, Northrup said, an inquest may be held at a later date.

The death is being investigated by Northrup's office and Danville police.
