URBANA — Division Chief Brian Nightlinger has been named the fire department's interim chief while city officials look to replace now-retired department head Mike Dilley.
Nightlinger said the city is advertising nationally for the job, with applications due by July 13. He said he plans to apply and imagines some or all of the department's other three division chiefs might apply, too.
In the meantime, Nightlinger is in charge. Dilley retired this month after six years as the Urbana fire chief and 30 years with the department.
Like other city department heads, the fire chief is hired by way of mayoral appointment. That puts Mayor Laurel Prussing in charge of who gets the job.
Nightlinger said not much will change during his interim appointment. The department's executive team comprises the fire chief and the four division chiefs, and that team remains intact — short Dilley, of course.
"We're going to continue on with our management team," Nightlinger said. "That's how we run the fire department."
