Rantoul man admits car burglary, DUI

URBANA — A Rantoul man who admitted entering a police "bait" car to steal and to driving under the influence of alcohol faces up to 20 years in prison when sentenced next month.

Michael A. Mackey, 41, whose last known address was in the 400 block of East Grove Street, had been wanted in May for questioning in connection with two Champaign robberies that occurred within hours of each other on May 18.

After Mackey was found May 31 in Paxton, authorities ended up not charging him with either of those crimes.

On Wednesday, Mackey pleaded guilty before Judge Heidi Ladd to the Nov. 22 burglary of a car that was in a parking garage in the 300 block of East Daniel Street in Champaign.

Assistant State's Attorney Matt Banach said police responded to an alarm that had been put on the car and found Mackey in the car, putting into his backpack a laptop computer, a mini-laptop and a keyboard that police had marked. Banach said police found gloves and a screwdriver in Mackey's pocket.

The car had been put in the deck because of a rash of car burglaries in that area around that time.

Mackey also pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, admitting he drove on April 13 at a time when his blood-alcohol content was 0.12 percent, well over the limit for an Illinois motorist to be presumed intoxicated under the law.

Because of prior convictions, Mackey has to be sentenced as a Class X felon on the burglary charge, meaning he could get up to 30 years in prison, but Banach agreed to cap his sentencing recommendation at 20 years.

Ladd set sentencing for July 31.
