Rantoul man reported injured in accident

CHAMPAIGN — A Rantoul man was injured in an accident on Interstate 74 in Champaign-Urbana on Friday afternoon.

According to a state police report, Andrew J. Hopper, 22, who listed an address in Champaign, was driving west in the left lane of Interstate 74 at milepost 182 just ahead of a vehicle driven by David Abernathy, 42, who listed an address in Rantoul, at 12:11 p.m.

Strong headwinds tore a ladder rack off the bed of Hopper's vehicle, causing the ladder to land in the left lane.

Abernathy saw the ladder rack coming toward his vehicle and swerved to the left, hitting the center median wall. Abernathy's vehicle then spun out and traveled back to the right, coming to rest in the right ditch between the highway and the Neil Street exit ramp.

Abernathy was taken to Presence Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, which had no information on his condition on Friday night.

Hopper was not hurt.

Police issued no tickets in connection with the accident.
