Man drowns in west Champaign lake
CHAMPAIGN — An Urbana man pulled from a lake in west Champaign Saturday afternoon apparently died from drowning.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the man as Muzhi Liu, 26, formerly of Madison, Miss.
Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Keith Cunningham said rescue workers were called to the Maynard Lake subdivision at 2:19 p.m., where a man was reported to have been under water for several minutes.
Divers from the Cornbelt Fire Protection District rescue team found Mr. Liu at 2:57 p.m. He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was pronounced dead at 3:40 p.m.
Cunningham said a resident of the 1900 block of Moraine Drive was having a gathering of about 10 adults at his home. After they ate, several went swimming.
"One of the people got a little too far out and started struggling. The other guests jumped in the water to swim out to help him and he went under before they could get to him. They searched, and neighbors put boats in the water to help search," Cunningham said.
Cunningham said a detective was assigned to the case.
"It doesn't appear alcohol was a factor. It appears to be an accident," Cunningham said.
Northrup said an autopsy would be done.
The private lake in the 17-acre subdivision has a swimming area.
Maynard Lake is south of West Kirby Avenue between Interstate 57 on the west and Duncan Road on the east.
