Atwood-Hammond youth baseball gun raffle nets over $31,000

A youth baseball league in East Central Illinois will soon be deciding how to spend some of the money from a fundraiser that brought in more than $30,000.

The Atwood-Hammond Youth Baseball League held a raffle over the weekend for an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, which brought in $31,500.  The winner of the rifle is a man who lives in West Virginia.

League Commissioner Steve McClain said people from coast to coast purchased tickets or donated money to the fundraiser.  McClain said the challenge now will be to try and keep the excitement level high among those involved with the league.

The league has already begun the process of building a new tee ball diamond and purchased some equipment for the players and several items to improve the concession stand during the season.  A meeting will be held on Sunday to decide on how much of the raffle money to spend on other equipment and projects.

McClain said it will be important to carefully make decisions that will positively impact the long term future of the league.
