Teen sentenced to probation in robbery

URBANA — A Rantoul teen who admitted robbing a man in downtown Rantoul last winter has been sentenced to 30 months of probation.

Christian Baez, 17, of the 1200 block of Magnolia Lane, pleaded guilty Monday before Judge Harry Clem to a single count of robbery.

A police report said two men were leaving a business in the 100 block of North Garrard Street about 8:55 p.m. on Feb. 22 when they were approached by a man wearing jeans, a black jacket, a hood over his head and a white handkerchief covering his face.

The man grabbed a bank bag from one of the two victims and ran. One of the victims chased the robber, caught him in an alley about a half-block away, tackled him and got his money back. He recognized the robber as Baez, who ran away.

The victims reported the incident to police and they arrested Baez at his home.
