Boys & Girls Club warns about magazine-sale scam

CHAMPAIGN — The Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club is warning consumers about a scam involving people selling books and magazines door-to-door supposedly in support of the club.

Executive assistant Tammy E. Ebert said the club received a call Monday afternoon from a citizen who had been targeted by the scam and was concerned that others might be as well. The woman did not say where she lived.

"We do not do door-to-door solicitations. We do not authorize anyone to do them on our behalf," Ebert said. "This is a scam."

Officials sent a press release out immediately in order to protect other consumers, she said.

"If someone comes to your door selling anything for the Boys & Girls Club DO NOT buy anything from them and call the police immediately," the release said.
