Charleston man facing charges in vehicle-bike accident

A Charleston man is facing charges in connection with a fatal accident over the weekend that killed one bicyclist and injured four others.

Twenty-one year-old Samuel Meadows was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of aggravated driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a personal injury or fatal accident.

The Coles County sheriff's office said Meadows was driving a car that hit five people who were on bicycles south of Charleston near the Bent Tree Golf Course around 9 p.m. Saturday.

Four of the cyclists were taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, including 16 year-old Leonard Beachy, who was later pronounced dead.  The other three were treated and released.

The fifth injured bicyclist was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.  His condition is unknown.

The sheriff's office said Meadows drove away, but he was found and arrested just after midnight.

Despite what the sheriff's office reported, this young man was not found and arrested later. He called the police multiple times and was driven to the police station by family members to turn himself in.
