Champaign officials to celebrate bike recognition

The City of Champaign is celebrating a national recognition tonight for promoting safe and convenient options for bikers around the city.

In May, the League of American Bicyclists added Champaign to the Bicycle Friendly Community list, making it one of around 250 bicycle friendly communities in the state.

Since 2008, the city said it has added nearly 15 miles of new bicycle lanes on city streets on top of new bike parking areas in the Center City.  It has also held numerous events promoting bike safety.

Tonight's recognition event is at 6:15 at the corner of Neil and Chester.  Later, at 7, the Bicycle Friendly Community award will officially be presented to the Champaign City Council at the city building.
