Fire causes $50,000 damage to home near Ogden

Fire heavily damaged a home and its contents on Wednesday afternoon.

Homer Assistant Fire Chief Bub Miller said no one was home when the fire started. He said it caused $50,000 worth of damage.

Champaign County sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Mills said an off-duty Champaign firefighter saw flames coming from the house in the 1800 block of County Road 2700 E just before 1:30 p.m.

Firefighters from St. Joseph-Stanton, Royal-Ogden, Homer, Fithian and Gifford responded to the blaze.

They rotated in and out while fighting the fire, Miller said.

“It was hot in there,” Miller said. “We didn’t put everyone in at the same time.”

The fire was under control in less than an hour.

Mills said preliminary information suggests the house was hit by lightning, but Miller said an investigator will be brought in to determine the cause.

The fire started in the north breezeway of the house, Miller said.

County Road 2700 E in front of the home was closed while crews fought the fire.
