Fundraising nearly finished for Paxton dog park
PAXTON — How soon will dogs in the Paxton area have their own park? It could be sooner than one could bark if the Paxton Dog Park Committee's fundraising efforts for a proposed dog park at Coady Park are any indication.
Committee members Jon and Angie Russell told the Paxton Park District Board on Tuesday that the committee raised $1,500 from its booth at the Paxton Fourth of July celebration, including a $1,000 donation from Doug's Pharmacy of Paxton.
Due in part to that fundraising success at Pells Park on the Fourth of July, the dog park committee has raised $14,300 so far of its goal of $17,000 for the dog park.
"Their fundraising is getting really close to them reaching their goal," Park Board Vice President Steve Sample said.
The progress has gone so well that the dog park committee and park board planned at Tuesday's meeting to set a date to discuss operations at the dog park.
"We're meeting them sometime relatively soon," Jon Russell said. "We're going to have an annual membership fee of some sort to help cover minor expenses.
"We need to discuss what those fees are going to be and how they are going to be collected. I think our intent at this point is to operate very similarly to the way the Urbana dog park operates. That seems to work well. We're going to take what they do and pretty much copy it."
