The University of Illinois Board of Trustees' Governance, Personnel and Ethics Committee on Thursday advanced several key appointments for the UI's Urbana-Champaign campus. The board as a whole is expected to approve the promotions and appointments later this month at their meeting in Chicago.
— Engineering. Andreas Cangellaris, head of the College of Engineering's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been chosen to lead the college as its new permanent dean when the new academic year starts on Aug. 16. He replaces interim dean Mike Bragg, who accepted the position of Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Washington. Bragg had been filling in after the previous dean, Ilesanmi "Ade" Adesida, was promoted to provost. Cangellaris will earn $328,000 annually.
— Library. The new dean of libraries and university librarian will be John Wilkin, an associate university librarian at the University of Michigan who directs the school's library information technology and publishing divisions and its university press. Wilkin will replace Paula Kaufman, who is returning to teaching. Kaufman has been university librarian since 1999 and dean of libraries since 2009. Wilkin will assume his new position at the UI on Aug. 16 and earn $240,000 annually.
— Liberal Arts and Sciences. Following the departure of LAS Dean Ruth Watkins, campus officials have recommended UI psychology Professor Brian Ross to step in as interim dean until a permanent successor is chosen. Watkins is leaving the UI to be senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Utah.
— Media. Advertising Professor Jan Slater, who has been interim dean of the College of Media for three years, will be dean for two years. She is expected to hold that position (without the interim in the title) through Aug. 15, 2015, with the anticipation that the campus will launch a national search for the position in summer 2014. She will earn $253,400 annually.
— ACES. Bob Hauser, dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences since 2010, will have his appointment continued for another year.
— Labor and Employment Relations. Longtime UI Professor Fritz Drasgow has been named the interim dean designate of School of Labor and Employment Relations. He replaces Joe Martocchio, who stepped down earlier this year.
