Savoy OKs bids higher than estimates
SAVOY — Board members all favored two construction projects despite their over-budget price tags.
The lowest bid for the improvements to the drainage ditch parallel to Woodfield Drive north of Arbours Drive in The Arbours subdivision came in about 20 percent higher than the budgeted amount.
The board approved the low bid from Stark Excavating at $209,862.50 with a total cost of $220,000 to cover contingencies.
The budget for the project was $175,000, although village officials knew the project would be difficult to estimate because of complications accessing the site, which is behind several businesses on Woodfield Drive.
Despite the higher-than-expected cost of the project, village officials agreed the bids received were fair bids and the project is a priority.
Another project that will be over budget is the rebuild of Holly Court, also in The Arbours subdivision.
According to Director of Public Works/Village Engineer Brent Maue, the pavement on Holly Court is badly deteriorated and has become a problem, especially in the winter.
"We had a lot of issues with ice on that road," Maue said. "We had areas with 6 to 8 inches of ice."
