Serious injuries reported after young driver falls asleep

HARRISTOWN — An 8-year-old is in the hospital with serious injuries after a 15-year-old driver fell asleep behind the wheel.

According to an Illinois State Police report, the 15-year-old with an instruction permit was being supervised by a 44-year-old woman before the driver fell asleep traveling east on Interstate 72 near Harristown in Macon County around 4:46 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the 2003 Mitsubishi Montero overturned after the driver lost control. The 8-year-old was the only passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was thrown from the vehicle.

The woman in the front passenger seat had to be extricated from the car. All four occupants, including a 43-year-old man, were transported to St. John's Hospital in Springfield. The 8-year-old was later airlifted to St. Francis Children's Hospital in Peoria with "serious injuries."

Police are not releasing the names of anyone who was in the car. No charges have been filed, though police say an investigation is pending.
