Champaign-Urbana has gotten a "Top Ten" ranking in a comparison of the nation's metropolitan areas — with this comparison measuring the "best places for work-life balance."

Champaign-Urbana ranked fifth best in the country, behind list-topper Corvallis, Ore.; Ames, Iowa; Ithaca, N.Y.; and Bloomington-Normal, Ill.

To determine the best places for work-life balance, collaborators at the NerdWallet website looked at census figures for commute times; median earnings for men and women in full-time, year-round jobs; and median hours worked per week.

According to NerdWallet, the average commute time in Champaign-Urbana was 18 minutes; median pay for men was $47,338; median pay for women was $36,138; and median work week was 35.1 hours.

That gave Champaign-Urbana a work-life balance score of 72.4. The score for Corvallis was 78.3, followed by Ames at 76.4, Ithaca at 75.8 and Bloomington-Normal at 74.5.

Big Ten communities were well-represented among the top 20 metro areas for work-life balance. Iowa City, Iowa, ranked 13th; State College, Pa., 14th; Lansing-East Lansing, Mich., 16th; and Ann Arbor, Mich., 17th.

The narrative for NerdWallet's rankings said the Champaign-Urbana area "has plenty of parks as well as public transportation, making the city easy to explore."

Champaign-Urbana also has "growing education and health care industries, and there are many theaters," the website posting stated. "Residents can even attend the Roger Ebert Film Festival every April."
