Man sought for firing gun in Champaign park; no injuries reported

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are looking for the man who fired shots in a city park Tuesday afternoon.

A release from Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said officers were called to Douglass Park near Fifth and Grove streets at 1:15 p.m. for several shots fired.

Witnesses reported seeing a man get out of a dark-colored sport utility vehicle, enter the park, and fire multiple shots at three people who were sitting at a picnic table there. He then ran back to the SUV, which had circled the block and returned for pickup.

Both the driver and the shooter left before police got there.

No one was injured and no property damage was reported to police.

Police ask anyone with information to call the station at (217) 351-4545 or callers can remain anonymous by calling Crimestoppers at 373-8477 (TIPS). Information can also be sent by anonymous web tip by going to: http://www.373tips.com or by texting keyword "CCTIP" plus the information to 274637 (CRIMES). Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for information leading to an arrest.
