Park board considers consistent hours of operation

CHAMPAIGN — Park district board members this week will take a look at opening and closing times for Champaign's parks and see if they can come up with a consistent policy governing their hours of operation.

The park board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Bresnan Meeting Center, 706 Kenwood Rd., C.

Park district Executive Director Bobbie Herakovich said the district's code calls for parks to generally be open from dawn until dusk — but that is sometimes hard to define, and it does not always accommodate park users.

Parks with certain amenities, like lighted tennis courts, might be able to stay open past dusk, Herakovich said. Park officials also want to be able to define for police when a park closes.

"We're looking for some consistency," Herakovich said.

The park district tries to accommodate requests from neighbors of the park, Herakovich said. Most recently, officials have been receiving calls from Johnston Park neighbors asking for changes in hours of operation there.

Park board members on Wednesday will also consider a bid for a new digital projection system at the Virginia Theatre — that is part of $330,000 worth of additional renovations to be made to the theater this year, including an overhaul of the projector room itself, Herakovich said.
