Event to raise money for King students' backpacks

URBANA — Piato Catering and Cafe is hosting a $5 buffet to benefit King Elementary in Urbana.

It's scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 8 at Piato Cafe at Lincoln Square in Urbana.

It will be an all-you-can-eat buffet, either dine-in or carry out. The restaurant will accept cash, credit or check and will not accept gift certificates for the benefit. The buffet will also feature live music.

The goal is to raise $3,000 to fill 300 backpacks, one for each King student. Additional money raised will benefit students who attend Prairie Elementary, also in Urbana.

Piato will also be accepting donations of Crayola crayons, Crayola markers, watercolor paint sets, colored pencils, backpacks, loose-leaf notebook paper, pencils, gently used children's clothing, new socks, new underwear, Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer. Additional monetary donations will also be welcomed.

The children's clothing will be used for students who are unable to bring in their own change of clothes in case they soil their own.

Piato has raised money for King Elementary for years because of its high rate of poverty among students.

Anyone who has questions or wants to contribute but cannot attend can call Piato at 217-344-9025.
