State certifies union for Urbana parks workers

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Labor Relations Board on Wednesday certified the Service Employees International Union as the exclusive representative for 16 maintenance and grounds employees at the Urbana Park District.

The action was taken, said Melissa Mylinski, executive director of the ILRB, after the park district declined to contest the unionization request.

Mylinski said she signed the union certification on Wednesday.

"We did not protest the union so it will be moving forward," said Vicki Mayes, executive director of the park district.

No other park district employees are represented by a labor union.
