Bicyclist still hospitalized after being hit by car

URBANA — A Champaign man remained hospitalized Friday with injuries he received Thursday afternoon when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in southeast Urbana.

An Urbana police report said Richard J. Francis, 52, of the 700 block of South Ashton Drive, was riding his bicycle west on Windsor Road at 4 p.m. when he apparently cycled into the crosswalk and into the path of a car headed south on Philo Road.

The driver of the car, Lori L. Forster, 49, of rural Sidney, was unable to avoid hitting Francis, the report said.

The report said Francis received "significant" injuries and was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital by ambulance. He was still being treated there Friday and his condition was not available.

Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin said an accident reconstruction specialist was assigned to the case. Seraphin said Francis was wearing a helmet.

The report said Forster was ticketed for operation of an uninsured vehicle.
