Volo to demonstrate fiber service in Thomasboro

THOMASBORO — Volo Broadband will host a public demonstration Saturday of its fiber broadband service in Thomasboro.

The service, which has a starting price of $29.95 a month, is touted as the "first sub-$30-per-month gigabit fiber service in the country," according to a Volo release.

Known as Digital Water Gigabit Fiber, the service had a test bed rollout in Thomasboro, which is now complete.

In the release, Thomasboro Mayor Brad Morris said Digital Water provides "top-quality, super-fast and very reliable Internet services for our residents, our businesses and our community institutions."

The public demonstration is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Thomasboro fire station, 101 N. Church St., with refreshments provided.

Area residents can try out the next generation of fiber broadband, ask questions about it and find out when it might be available in their community.

Volo Broadband CEO Peter Folk said talks are already underway with neighborhoods in Champaign, Urbana, Savoy and surrounding communities about bringing the technology there.

Folk said fiber broadband is available in many places, but is usually more expensive and slower than Digital Water.

He said a few companies offer gigabit-speed services, including Chattanooga, Tenn.'s Fi-Speed 1000 for $299.99 a month and Google Fiber in Kansas City (both Missouri and Kansas) for $70 a month.

In Champaign-Urbana, "the UC2B grant-funded infrastructure offers 20 megabits per second for $20 a month, but only in specific areas with a demonstrated low broadband adoption rate," the release stated.

Explaining the Digital Water name, Folk said, "Volo sees a future where Internet access across the country is as plentiful, reliable and low-cost as water is today."

Folk said he believes Digital Water is "the best deal in broadband and phone service in the nation, regardless of technology." He said Volo is investing in local communities so that both they and Volo will thrive.
