Donations sought for Danville celebration

DANVILLE — The Danville Caucus Inc. is seeking donations for its fourth annual Unity in the Community celebration, which will be held on Aug. 17 at Carver Park.

The group, which volunteers in Danville public schools among other efforts, is seeking both monetary donations and items that can be given away as prizes at the celebration, according to organizer Latisha Wilson.

"Whatever we raise will go back to the kids," Wilson said.

The celebration will start at 1 p.m. with a police-escorted march, called March for Academic Excellence, which begins at Dollar General, 100 N. Griffin St., and ends at Carver Park.

A program will begin at 2 p.m. in the park. It will feature guest speakers who will discuss safety at school and in the community.

The program also will feature a short play put on by local youth, which was written to inspire kids to stay in school and do their personal best.

The celebration will include food, other entertainment and prizes for children including bicycles, backpacks and books. There also will be prizes for adults including gift baskets and gift certificates.

Last year, "it seemed like everyone went away with something," Wilson said, adding organizers are still gathering prizes.

Donations may be sent to TDC, P.O. Box 1941, Danville, IL, 61834-1941.

For more information, contact Wilson at 390-7075 or Gladys Davis at 443-2757.
