GCMS bid higher than expected; some work to be delayed

GIBSON CITY — School board members met in special session recently to review roofing bids, set the salary for a new library clerk's position and consider restructuring middle school athletics.

Board members were disappointed to receive only one bid, and it was higher than hoped. As a result, not all of the work can be completed this year. A total of $94,629 was awarded to Wayne Cain and Sons Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc. of Champaign.

Officials had anticipated the scope of work might exceed this year's budget, so they had let the bid in four parts. The work this year will involve a new roof over the four-classroom addition at the building's south end and re-seaming the existing roof over the main classroom area and part of the cafeteria.

In other business, board members assigned $14.20 as the hourly rate for the new library clerk position at the middle school.

After about 30 minutes of discussion and questions, board members unanimously approved a realignment of athletics for GCMS Middle School. The plan shows most sports programs will remain as is, but sixth-grade teams will be eliminated for the girls' and boys' basketball programs and an intramural program will be added for grades 5-7.
