Man sentenced to probation in purse-snatching

URBANA — A Champaign man who pleaded guilty to robbing a woman of her purse in downtown Urbana in the spring has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Scott D. Zumwalt, 28, who listed an address in the 1600 block of Coronado Drive, admitted that on April 25 he grabbed a woman's purse as she was crossing Main Street in downtown Urbana near Broadway Avenue.

A witness heard the woman's screams for help and caught Zumwalt nearby, holding him until police arrived.

An evaluation of Zumwalt by a Champaign psychiatrist found he was fit to stand trial. He entered the guilty plea on Friday before Judge Harry Clem.

Zumwalt was given credit for 93 days already served in the county jail. He was also ordered to get a mental health evaluation and take advantage of any recommended treatment.
