Arrest made in Champaign bank robbery
CHAMPAIGN - Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for the holdup of a Champaign bank late Wednesday morning.
A release from Champaign police said at 11:37 a.m., officers were called to the Central Illinois Bank, 302 W. Springfield Ave., C, where employees reported a man came in and handed a female teller a note demanding money.
The robber acted as if he had a gun, but none of the seven employees or two patrons present saw one. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the robber left in a car.
Sgt. Dave Griffet said police began patrolling the area and found a car running in a driveway of a home in the 200 block of East Hill Street in Champaign eight minutes after the holdup.
In the backyard of that house, police found and arrested Kaleb Shields, whose last known address was in the 2400 block of Sharlyn Drive, U.
No one in the bank was injured. Griffet said police recovered the cash, which was believed to be under $500.
Griffet said Shields gave police a statement.
