The head of an Urbana trauma center said it takes a large team of people to make sure patients receive the care they need.
Carle Foundation Hospital is marking its 25th anniversary as the Level One Trauma Center in East Central Illinois, a designation it received in 1988 after the old Burnham City Hospital in Champiagn had been serving as the top trauma center.
Carle officials said the need for trauma services has steadily increased over those years. They said more than 1,500 trauma patients were treated in 2012 compared to around 450 people in 1988.
Coordinator of Trauma Services and Nurse Practitioner Mary Beth Voights has been with the program since it began. Voights said the type of trauma patients Carle sees is pretty much the same as it was 25 years ago, but there have been some changes.
