Bicyclist dies in Douglas County collision

A 41-year-old Champaign man died in a bicycle-truck collision in Douglas County.

According to a preliminary state police report, Michael T. Patridge, 41, of Champaign was riding a bicycle north on U.S. 45, just south of Douglas County Road 600N, at 10:46 a.m. on Saturday. He was riding on the northbound white line at the side of the road.

Caleb J. Tomas, 28, of Humboldt was driving a pickup truck north and began to move to the left to pass Patridge. As Tomas was passing, Patridge appeared to lose control and began riding and falling to the left, crossing into the path of Tomas' truck.

The truck hit the bicycle and Patridge was thrown off.

One assumes the defendant's account of events, not the victim's, is presented here as fact.

This does not make sense. Michael rode his bike all the time and was not one to wobble and lose control.

Sounds very contrived.
