No injuries in campus-area apartment fire

CHAMPAIGN — A roof burned, but nothing more when a three-story apartment building at 509 E. Clark St. near the University of Illinois campus went up in flames on Sunday night.

Residents evacuated the building on their own, said Fire Marshal John Koller, and no one was hurt.

Champaign firefighters were called to the fire at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The fire was knocked out not long after.

Koller said the fire was contained to the roof and did not extend down into the living areas, though some of the roughly 20 apartment units did take some water damage.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.

Authorities issed an Illini-Alert at 9:50 p.m. and then issued the all-clear message at 11:25 p.m.
