Man arrested on drug possession charge

URBANA — A Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County jail following his arrest in Urbana on a drug possession charge.

Robert Matthew Barker, 24, who listed an address in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue, Champaign, was charged on Monday with unlawful possession with the intent to deliver cannabis.

Barker's next court appearance was set for Oct. 8.

According to an Urbana police report, police pulled over a vehicle containing Barker at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and University Avenue in Urbana at 9 p.m. May 10 due to improper lane usage.

When officers reached the vehicle, they said they noticed the scent of suspected marijuana coming from the car, so they brought a police dog to the scene.

After the dog alerted to the apparent scent of marijuana, police searched the vehicle and found one pound of suspected marijuana and cash in the car.

While no arrest was made at that time, police obtained a warrant for Barker's arrest and arrested him at his place of employment in the 1900 block of North Lincoln Avenue, Urbana, on Thursday.

Urbana police could not say on Monday night why Barker was not arrested in May.
