Man sentenced to 3 years for cannabis plea

URBANA — An Urbana man who had admitted he had cannabis for sale last spring has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Emmanuel Butler, 34, who listed an address in the 500 block of East Green Street, pleaded guilty Thursday before Champaign County Judge Harry Clem to possession with intent to deliver cannabis.

He admitted that on March 7, there were 21 grams of cannabis in 15 plastic bags in a can with a false bottom in his home, which Urbana police obtained a warrant to search.

Police also found other indicators of drug sales, including plastic bags, a digital scale and a cannabis grinder in the apartment.

Court records show Butler had prior convictions for cocaine trafficking; possession with intent to sell controlled substances; forgery; possession of a stolen vehicle; burglary; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Another case charging Butler with robbery, theft from person and domestic battery that allegedly happened July 1 in Urbana was dismissed in return for Butler's guilty plea.
