Urbana man charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse

URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly fondled a girl in his home has been criminally charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

The charge filed Friday in Champaign County Circuit Court against Clinton W. Smith, 63, who listed an address in the 100 block of Glover Avenue, alleges that some time in early June, he fondled a girl under the age of 13 who was visiting in his home.

Urbana police investigator Matt Rivers said his department was notified of the abuse in early July after the girl spoke to her mother about what allegedly happened and the mother contacted police.

Rivers said it took him a while to conduct interviews with the alleged victim and others who were visiting in Smith's home since some of them live in other cities, but he learned that Smith reportedly took photos with his cellphone of that girl and another as they slept. He also allegedly fondled one of the girls, Rivers said.

Rivers said he was able to interview Smith on Thursday at the police department and arrested him at the conclusion of the interview.

If convicted of the Class 2 felony, Smith faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.

Smith’s bond was set at $75,000. His next court appearance was set for Oct. 8.
