Texas man arrested for armed robbery in Rantoul

URBANA — A Texas man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $500,000 bond following his arrest in connection with an armed robbery in Rantoul.

Gregorio Torres, 34, who listed an address in Mission, Texas, was charged on Monday with two counts of felony armed robbery.

Torres' next court appearance was set for Oct. 15.

According to a Rantoul police report, a 25-year old man was standing near the intersection of Sangamon Avenue and Century Boulevard at 12:52 a.m. Monday when he was approached by a man displaying a handgun.

Police said the armed man hit the victim in the head with the gun, demanded and took some money from him and then ran off.

When police arrived, the victim was bleeding from the head.

Rantoul police set up a perimeter around the area and found Torres in a nearby alley. Police recovered some money and a handgun from Torres.

According to police, the victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment. No information was available on the victim's condition.
