Mattoon Police working on more charges in recent arsons

Mattoon Police are working on filing 13 additional arson charges against a man in connection with a string of arsons in the city in about an 18 month time period.

Mattoon Police Chief Jeff Branson said an investigation into more than a dozen fires has led police to seek those charges against 37 year-old Joseph Derixson of Mattoon.  Derixson has already been charged for a fire that was intentionally set near the Salvation Army in Mattoon last month.

Coles County State's Attorney Brian Bower said he has not yet received the report from the police department on the additional charges.

Derixson is due back in court on Sept. 16 in connection with the fire at the Salvation Army.  But Bower said that hearing could also include the additional charges against Derixson.
