Urbana man charged with sexual abuse

URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly molested a girl over the weekend has been criminally charged.

The Champaign County state's attorney's office Tuesday filed a single count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against Earnest Lee Burrus, 43, who listed an address on Mitchem Drive.

Urbana police investigator Duane Maxey said Burrus allegedly had sexual contact with the child on Sunday. The child reported what happened to her mother, who contacted police. Burrus was arrested Monday evening.

Maxey said he learned that Burrus is a registered sex offender due to a conviction he received in Texas in 1997 involving a teenage girl.

If convicted of the Class 2 felony, Burrus faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
