URBANA — An employee of an assisted-living and retirement home in Mahomet has been criminally charged in connection with the theft of prescription medication from a resident's room.
Linda L. Plotner, 54, of Downs was charged Thursday in Champaign County Circuit Court with burglary and possession of a controlled substance for allegedly entering a room at the Bridle Brook Adult Community, 1505 Patton Drive, and taking Vicodin, a pain killer.
A Mahomet police report said that on Tuesday, an administrator for the home contacted police to report that an employee was suspected of taking the drugs. The administrator told police that on three occasions since May, Vidodin had reportedly been taken from locked cabinets in three different apartments to which only nurses have keys.
The report said the administrator took steps to determine who was taking the drugs and on Monday found a set of keys in a medicine cabinet. The fob on the keys belonged to Plotner, who wasn't assigned to work in that area. Plotner, a housekeeper, had the keys because she used to be a nurse, the report said.
When confronted, Plotner admitted that she had not turned in her keys to the medicine cabinets from when she was a nurse and that she had been taking the prescription medication to give to a relative who was having back problems.
If convicted of the more serious charge of burglary, Plotner faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
