Man must repay $34,000 in benefit fraud

URBANA — An Urbana man was ordered to repay the state of Illinois $34,000 after admitting that he illegally received unemployment benefits for almost two years.

Bobby Crowe, 39, who listed an address in the 500 block of MacArthur Drive, pleaded guilty Tuesday to state benefits fraud before Champaign County Judge Harry Clem and was sentenced to 30 months of probation.

He admitted that between August 22, 2009, and March 26, 2011, he received unemployment benefits when he was not eligible because of wages he was earning from other jobs.

Clem noted that Crowe had repaid the state $2,000 of the $34,588 he owes.

The case against Crowe was filed by the Illinois attorney general's office in December.
