Fourth Street extension to open Thursday

A major road on the south side of Champaign will have a new intersection starting Thursday morning.

Crews have been working for more than a year on extending Fourth Street south from St. Mary's Road all the way down to Windsor Road.  The work is now mostly complete, and the street will be opened to traffic for the first time Thursday morning around 10 a.m.

City of Champaign Resident Engineer Lou Braghini said the Fourth Street extension will be very beneficial to the south end of town.

Braghini added that there will be still be construction activity on other portions of the Fourth Street project, such as extending Gerty Drive to Fourth Street.

And drivers are reminded that there is a stop light at the Fourth Street intersection at Windsor Road that has been blinking yellow for several weeks.  So you should be aware that the light will be fully functional once the road opens Thursday morning.
