Opening Night at the Virginia Theatre set for Friday

The Virginia Theatre in Downtown Champaign is celebrating its opening night on Friday with performances that will reflect the theatre's history.

Theatre Director Steven Bentz said the celebration will feature live music, dance, comedy and other acts, including the premiere of a show about Illini Football legend Red Grange visiting the theatre.

Bentz said all of the performances will be in a variety show format similar to when the theatre first opened over 90 years ago.

Bentz added that in addition to the performances, there will be an ice cream social to kick off the event at 5:30 just outside of the Virginia Theatre.

Bentz made the comments Thursday on A Penny for Your Thoughts on WDWS.

Tickets for the celebration are still available by calling or visiting the theatre, and they can also be purchased online at the Virginia Theatre website.

Doors open Friday at 7 p.m, with the first performance starting at 7:30.

And if you can't make it to the event, you can listen to it live on WDWS.
