UI aims for next record: organ donor signups

URBANA — University of Illinois students are aiming to register a record number of organ donors on Sunday.

The event will be held during Quad Day, when UI student groups set up tables and displays on the Quad seeking to sign up new members. It will be from noon to 4 p.m. on the Quad.

The drive is being organized by Illini for Hope, a campus group that works to raise awareness about the need for organ and tissue donor registrations. Also partnering on the event is the Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network.

Organizers aim to surpass the number they registered last year on one day — 2,262 people.

Participating in the drive will be Robyn Deterding, the Director of Campus Recreation, whose son died in a traffic accident in 2000. His organ and tissue donations helped save the lives of others needing transplants. Brian Quick, an associate professor in the Department of Communication, whose father received a kidney transplant, will also be on hand.
