Farm Bureau has materials for teachers

DANVILLE — Vermilion County teachers can pick up free materials and lesson plans and schedule classroom presentations at an Ag in the Classroom open house.

The open house will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Farm Bureau Auditorium, 1905 U.S. 150 at Henning Road, Danville.

Teachers, administrators, parents and others who are interested in learning more about the resources available to schools are invited to attend.

They will have a chance to review many supplies and learning kits available to teach children about agriculture in their daily lives. Teachers may reserve the learning kits for use in their classrooms.

Ag literacy coordinators Susie Willard and Eileen Huckstadt said they are excited to start their second year of classroom presentations.

"Our classroom topics will include wheat and Christmas trees this fall," Willard said. "Then in January, we'll be using the book 'Auntie Yang's Great Soybean Picnic' to explore them many uses of soybeans."

Spring presentations will focus on soils, seeds and gardening.

Huckstadt said all of the activities will be tied to the Common Core State Standards.

"Ag in the Classroom isn't additional material for teachers; it's incorporating ag themes in their regular lessons," she said.

Refreshments will be available.
