Mortenson reflects on one year anniversary at fire service institute

As he approaches his one year anniversary on the job, the head of the Illinois Fire Service Institute in Champaign said his focus continues to be prodiving hands-on training.

That's according to retired Marine Corps Coronel Royal Mortenson, who took the head job at the fire institute last September.

He said in the fire-fighting industry, there's a big difference between education and training.

Mortenson added that the fire service institute has been in existence for 89 years, and last year, it trained over 65,000 students.  He said most students come from Illinois, but some have came from as far away as Pennsylvania.

Mortenson made the comments this past weekend on Central Illinois Business on WDWS.
