Arson may be cause of Loda house fire

LODA — The Iroquois County sheriff’s office is assisting the state fire marshal’s office in an investigation of a suspicious fire in Loda.

The fire at 409 E. Jefferson St. is believed to have occurred sometime overnight Saturday. The single-story home, owned by Diane Eilts, was being rented to a tenant who was not home when the fire started, according to Jerry Sanders, assistant fire chief for the Loda Fire Protection District.

The fire appears to have started inside the home, said Eric Starkey, an investigator for the sheriff’s office. Starkey said the home sustained smoke damage throughout, with fire damage mostly contained to one room.

“The damage wasn’t evident from the exterior of the house,” Starkey said.

Starkey said the fire marshal’s office is investigating the fire as a possible arson.

Sanders said firefighters were not called to respond to the fire. Sanders said he did not know the fire occurred until the home’s owner called his home Sunday afternoon. Sanders said the fire had been put out by the time he arrived.

Both Sanders and Starkey were unable to say how the fire started.
