Urbana will close streets for Labor Day parade

URBANA — Several streets in Urbana will be closed for one hour on Monday for the Champaign County AFL/CIO's annual Labor Day parade.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., starting at Illinois Street and Broadway Avenue near Lincoln Square.

From there the parade will travel south on Broadway Avenue to Washington Street and then east on Washington Street to the Brookens Administrative Center.

Eric Westlund, community services liaison for the Champaign County AFL/CIO, said up to 47 different groups are scheduled to take part in the parade.

"It is a celebration of working people," Westlund said. "That's what the AFL/CIO is all about."

Streets along the parade route will reopen after the parade passes through each intersection.

Following the parade, a free picnic (with hot dogs, chips and soft drinks) is planned at Prairie Park in Urbana, with inflatables for the children.

Kilborn Alley will perform in concert at noon.
