One person hospitalized following apartment fire in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Investigators are looking into the cause of an apartment fire that injured one person Thursday night in Champaign.

According to a fire-department report, firefighters were called to a three-story apartment building at 1510 Grandview Drive, just east of Hessel Park, at 8:47 p.m. after receiving a report of smoke coming from an apartment.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from a third-floor apartment.

At least three people were evacuated from the building, but firefighters needed to help remove one person in the apartment where the fire happened.

That person was taken to an area hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 9:01 p.m. and were beginning to remove their equipment by 9:15 p.m.

Champaign fire investigator John Koller said it was too early to determine a cause or a dollar estimate to the damage.
