Man sentenced to probation in cannabis case

URBANA — A Decatur man who admitted he had cannabis intended for sale has been sentenced to two years of first offender probation.

Chad Laswell, 27, pleaded guilty Friday before Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd, to having between 10 and 30 grams of cannabis for sale on March 4.

Assistant State's Attorney Matt Banach said a state trooper stopped Laswell on University Avenue near Wright Street about 3 a.m. that day for an alleged traffic violation and discovered that his car smelled of cannabis. Police found about three ounces of suspected cannabis and a glass pipe in the car.

Laswell was allowed to plead guilty to the lesser charge. He was also ordered to pay in excess of $1,850 in fines, fees and costs, perform 30 hours of public service and get a substance abuse evaluation.

If he successfully completes the period of probation with no difficulties, Laswell will have no record of a conviction.
