Update: Shooting victim seeks help in Farmer City

FARMER CITY — A gunshot victim sought help at the Huck's convenience store in Farmer City  Sunday night, and DeWitt County sheriff's deputies have a "person of interest" in custody.

“There is one victim being treated at Carle for a gunshot wound,” said Sheriff Jered Shofner, who said the victim showed up at Huck's at 925 E. Clinton Ave. around 9:17 p.m.

A manager at the store said the shooting did not occur on the premises.

Shofner stated in a press release Monday morning that there appears to be no connection between this shooting and a homicide Saturday in Farmer City.

At 7:16 a.m. Saturday, police were called to the 200 block of South Main Street,  where they found the body of Blayne J. Benefield, 21, of rural Farmer City.

At 11 a.m., police arrested a suspect, whose name was not released. Charges are expected to be filed Monday in DeWitt County Court.
