Higgins will oppose Doran for Ford sheriff

PAXTON — Ford County Sheriff Mark Doran again faces a challenger in his bid for re-election.

Dennis Higgins announced his candidacy this week to oppose the two-term sheriff in the March 18 primary election.

The 62-year-old Higgins, a Gibson City resident, has been coordinator of the Ford County Emergency Management Agency since January 2009, following a 27-year career in emergency services that saw him work as a dispatcher, patrol officer, police chief, emergency medical technician, security guard and 911 coordinator.

The 47-year-old Doran, also of Gibson City, said he does not mind the competition for the job he has held since 2006. Doran is facing his another contested race for re-election, after easily defeating two Paxton residents — Robert Yates and Christopher White — in the February 2010 primary.

As of Tuesday, only Doran and Higgins had picked up the required nominating petitions from the Ford County Clerk's Office to become candidates for the March 2014 primary.
