Suspicious package not par for the course

CHAMPAIGN —  University of Illinois police say a suspicious package that was being sorted at the waste transfer station wasn’t exactly your run-of-the-mill
suspicious package and they applauded the employee who called police with his concerns.

“It was a golf bag with wires attached to a Tupperware bowl,” said Capt. Roy Acree.

“There was nothing explosive found. We are thinking it came from the engineering side of campus where a student may have done an experiment with it, and once done with it, threw it into the trash,” he said.

Trash from the engineering side of campus had been picked up Thursday morning and taken to the station, Acree said.

About 11:40 a.m., the employee was sifting through the trash at the waste transfer station at 10 St. Mary’s Road, just east of Neil Street, when he spotted the odd-looking contraption.

“What they did was correct. Call the police and let us get the bomb techs in. Everything went as well as could be expected,” Acree said.

The transfer station was evacuated and streets in the area closed while five members of the department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team got their gear together. They used their robot to isolate the package then used “disrupter” rounds of water to disassemble it, Acree said.

The incident was safely over just before 2 p.m., the streets reopened and the employees were allowed to go back to work, Acree said.
