Bridge removal will close I-74 in Mahomet next week

PARIS — The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the bridge carrying Lake of the Woods Road in Mahomet over Interstate 74 is scheduled to be removed on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Westbound I-74 will be closed to traffic on Tuesday while eastbound I-74 will be closed to traffic on Wednesday to allow for the safe removal of the bridge.

The closures will start at 10 p.m. and last until 6 a.m. the following day.

Interstate traffic will be detoured using Illinois 47, U.S. 150 (Lombard Street), and Prairieview Road. The opposing lanes of I-74 may be closed intermittently for a maximum of 15 minutes to allow the safe removal of the bridge.

The overall project has an anticipated completion date of Aug. 14, 2014. The contractor for the $4.3 million project is Stark Excavating Inc.

Motorists are advised to slow down or consider alternate routes.
